The receiver automatically makesthe necessary settings after you haveselected your room size and listeningposition.If you want to make more specific settings,refer to The System Setup menu.Use the front panel controls for the stepsbelow.1 Press STANDBY/ON to switch on.2 Press QUICK SETUP.3 Use the MULTI JOG dial to choose yourroom size.Depending on the distance of your speakersfrom the listening position, choose betweensmall, medium, or large (S, M or L), M beingan average-sized room.4 Press ENTER.5 Use the MULTI JOG dial to choose yourlistening position.You can cycle between the following choices:• FWD — If you are nearer to the frontspeakers than the surround speakers• MID — If you are equal distance from thefront and surround speakers• BACK — If you are nearer to the surroundspeakers than the front speakers6 Press ENTER to confirm your setup.The display shows the room size and listeningposition that you have selected.Important• Certain features explained in this section willnot be possible depending on the source (forexample, PCM 88.2 kHz / 96 kHz, DTS 96 kHz(24 bit) or WMA9 Pro sources).Auto playbackThe simplest, most direct listening option is theAuto Surround feature. With this, the receiverautomatically detects what kind of source you'replaying and selects multichannel or stereoplayback as necessary.• While listening to a source, press STEREOfor auto playback of a source.Press repeatedly until AUTO SURR. shows brieflyin the display (it will then show the decoding orplayback format). Check the digital formatindicators in the display to see how the source isbeing processed.Note• Stereo surround (matrix) formats are decodedaccordingly using 2 Pro Logic II MOVIE.• The Auto Surround feature is canceled if youconnect headphones or select the multichannel analoginputs.Listening in surround soundUsing this receiver, you can listen to any sourcein surround sound. However, the optionsavailable will depend on the type of source you'relistening to.• While listening to a source, press STANDARD.If the source is Dolby Digital, DTS, or DolbySurround encoded, the proper decoding format1 RECEIVER (STANDBY/ON)Switches the receiver between standby and on.2 Listening mode buttonsSTANDARDPress for Standard decoding and to switch betweenPro Logic II options.ADV.SURR.Switches between the various surround modes.STEREOSwitches between direct and stereo playback. Directplayback bypasses the tone controls for the mostaccurate reproduction of a source. Also selects theAuto Surround mode.3 TOP MENUDisplays the disc ‘top’ menu of a DVD disc.SETUPPress to access the System Setup menu.4 TUNER EDIT*Press to memorize and name a station for recall. Alsofunctions as the SETUP button for DVD/DVR units.S.RETRIEVERPress to restore CD quality sound to compressedaudio sources.5 (MASTER) VOLUME +/–Use to set the listening volume.6 EFFECT/CH SELPress repeatedly to select a channel, then use LEVEL+/– to adjust the level. Also selects the AdvancedSurround effect level (use LEVEL +/– to adjust).LEVEL +/–Use to adjust the effect and channel levels.7 SHIFTPress to access commands in a rectangle (above thebuttons) on the remote. These buttons are markedwith an asterisk (* ) in this section.8 SLEEPPress to change the amount of time before thereceiver switches into standby (30 min - 60 min - 90min - Off).DIMMERDims or brightens the display.ANALOG ATTAttenuates (lowers) the level of an analog input signalto prevent distortion.9 INPUT SELECTOR buttonsPress to select an input source (press DVD/DVR touse the DVD player/recorder controls on the remote).RECEIVERUse to switch to the receiver controls on the remotecontrol. Also used when setting up the surroundsound for the receiver.10 MIDNIGHT/LOUDNESSThese features give you good sound at low volumelevels when listening to movie (Midnight) or music(Loudness) sources. Press to switch betweenMIDNIGHT, LOUDNESS, and OFF.11 MENUDisplays the disc menu of DVD-Video discs.DIALOG E (DIALOGUE ENHANCEMENT)This feature localizes dialog in the center channel tomake it stand out from other background sounds in aTV or movie soundtrack.12 /ENTER13 RETURNConfirm and exit the current menu screen.ONE TOUCH COPY*Copies the currently playing title from DVD to HDD orvice-versa.14 MUTEMutes/unmutes the sound.15 DVD/DVR control buttonsYou can use these buttons to control a Pioneer DVDplayer or recorder connected to your system.16 TUNER controlsThe TUNING +/– buttons can be used to find radiofrequencies and the STATION +/– buttons can be usedto select preset radio stations.DISPLAYSwitches the display between station preset name andfrequency.CLASSSwitches between the three banks (classes) of stationpresets.17 MPXUse to switch between auto stereo and mono receptionof FM broadcasts. If the signal is weak then switching tomono will improve the sound quality.18 VSB MODESelects the Virtual Surround Back (VSB) mode.19 TONEPress this button to access the bass and treble controls,which you can then adjust with the MULTI JOG dial.20 QUICK SETUP21 SIGNAL indicatorsLights to indicate the type of input signal assigned forthe current component:DIGITALLights when a digital audio signal is detected.2 DIGITALLights when a Dolby Digital encoded signal is detected.DTSLights when a DTS encoded audio signal is detected.ANALOGLights when an analog signal is detected.22When the STANDARD mode of the receiver is on, thislights to indicate decoding of a DTS multichannelsignal.23 2 DIGITALWhen the STANDARD mode of the receiver is on, thislights to indicate decoding of a Dolby Digitalmultichannel signal.24 2 PRO LOGIC IIWhen the (STANDARD) Pro Logic II mode of thereceiver is on, 2 PRO LOGIC II lights to indicate ProLogic II decoding.25 VIR.SBLights during Virtual surround back processing.26 DIRECTLights when source direct playback is in use. Directplayback bypasses the tone controls for the mostaccurate reproduction of a source.will automatically be selected and shows in thedisplay.With two channel sources, press STANDARDrepeatedly to select from:• 2 Pro Logic II MOVIE — Up to 5.1 channelsound, especially suited to movie sources• 2 Pro Logic II MUSIC — Up to 5.1 channelsound, especially suited to music sources• 2 Pro Logic II GAME — Up to 5.1 channelsound, especially suited to video games• 2 PRO LOGIC — 5.1 channel surround soundUsing the Advanced surround effectsTry different settings with various soundtracks to seewhich you like.• Press ADV.SURR.(ADVANCED SURROUND)repeatedly to select a listening mode.• ADV. MOVIE — Suitable for movie sources.• ADV. MUSIC — Suitable for music sources.• TV SURR. — Provides surround sound for bothmono and stereo TV sources.• SPORTS — Suitable for sports programs.• ADV. GAME — Suitable for video games.• EXPANDED — Simulates multichannel surroundsound for two-channel sources.• EX. POWER (Extra Power) — Gives multichannelsound to a stereo source, using all of your speakers.• VIR. SURR — A virtual surround effect using justthe subwoofer and front speakers.• PHONESUR. (Phones Surround) — Creates theeffect of overall surround with headphones.Note• Use with Dolby Pro Logic for a stereo surroundeffect (stereo field is wider than Standard modeswith Dolby Digital sources).Setting the effect optionsWhen using surround effects, there are a number ofsettings you can adjust.1 Press EFFECT/CH SEL repeatedly to select thesetting you want to adjust.Depending on the current status / mode of thereceiver, certain options may not appear. Check thetable below for notes on this.2 Use the LEVEL+/– buttons to set it as necessary.See the table below for the options available for eachsetting. The defaults, if not stated, are listed in bold.3 Press EFFECT/CH SEL again to adjust othersettings.Using the Virtual Surround Back modeSelecting this mode allows you to hear a virtualsurround back channel through your surroundspeakers. For example, you can choose to listen tosources with no surround back channel information(for example, 5.1 encoded material) with emulated 6.1encoding (VSB ON). Sometimes the material maysound better in the 5.1 format for which it wasoriginally encoded. In this case you can simply switchit off (VSB OFF).• Press VSB MODE (front panel) to select a virtualsurround back channel option.Each press cycles through the options as follows:• VSB ON — Virtual Surround Back is always used(for example, on 5.1 encoded material)• VSB OFF — Virtual Surround Back mode isswitched offNote• You can't use the Virtual Surround Back mode withheadphones or with the STEREO / DIRECT mode.Listening in stereoWhen you select STEREO or DIRECT, you will hear thesource through just the front left and right speakers(and subwoofer). Dolby Digital and DTS multichannelsources are downmixed to stereo.• While listening to a source, press STEREO forstereo playback.Press repeatedly to switch between:• STEREO — The audio is heard with your surroundsettings and you can still use the Midnight,Loudness, and tone functions.• DIRECT — Bypass all effects and surroundsettings so that the audio remains as close to thesource audio signal as possible.• AUTO SURR. — See Auto playback above.Note• DIRECT switches to STEREO when using Midnight,Loudness, Dialog Enhancement, or the tone controls.Using the Sound RetrieverWhen audio data is removed during thecompression process, sound quality often suffersfrom an uneven sound image. The Sound Retrieverfeature employs new DSP technology that helpsbring CD quality sound back to compressed2-channel audio by restoring sound pressure andsmoothing jagged artifacts left over aftercompression.• While listening to a source, press S.RETRIEVER.Press repeatedly to switch between:• RTRV1 ON — This option is engineeredespecially for portable digital audio players.• RTRV2 ON — This option is engineeredespecially for portable digital radio devices (onlyapplicable when using the FRONT AUDIO INPUT).• OFF — Switches the Sound Retriever off.27 AUTO SURR.Lights when the Auto Surround feature is switchedon.28 ATTLights when ANALOG ATT is used to attenuate(reduce) the level of the analog input signal.29 SLEEPLights when the receiver is in sleep mode.30 Tuner indicators/ MONOLights when the mono mode is set using the MPXbutton./ STEREOLights when a stereo FM broadcast is being receivedin auto stereo mode./ TUNEDLights when a broadcast is being received.31 Speaker indicatorShows if the speaker system is on or not. SPAmeans the speakers are switched on. SP meansthe headphones are connected.32 ADV.SURR.
