12SmartNode 4400 Series Getting Started Guide About this guidePreventing Electrostatic Discharge DamageWhen starting to install interface cards place the interface card on its shielded plastic bag if you lay it onyour bench.Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can damage equipment and impair electrical circuitry. It occurs when electronicprinted circuit cards are improperly handled and can result in complete or intermittent failures.General observations• Clean the case with a soft slightly moist anti-static cloth• Place the unit on a flat surface and ensure free air circulation• Avoid exposing the unit to direct sunlight and other heat sources• Protect the unit from moisture, vapors, and corrosive liquidsAlways follow ESD prevention procedures when removing andreplacing cards.Wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap, ensuring that it makes goodskin contact. Connect the clip to an unpainted surface of thechassis frame to safely channel unwanted ESD voltagesto ground.To properly guard against ESD damage and shocks, the wriststrap and cord must operate effectively. If no wrist strap is avail-able, ground yourself by touching the metal part of the chassis.CAUTION
