Therefore, the following precautions are provided forsoldering a relay onto a PC board. Please refer to them during installation inorder to avoid problems. The protective measures used willdetermine suitability for automaticsoldering or automatic cleaning. Pleasefollow the recommendations listed in“Configuration and Construction” section.1. MOUNTING OF RELAY• Avoid bending the terminals to make therelay self-clinching. Relay performancecannot be guaranteed if the terminals arebent. Self-clinching terminal types areavailable depending on the type of relay.• Correctly drill the PC board according tothe given PC board pattern illustration.• Stick packaging is also available forautomatic mounting, depending on thetype of relay. (Be sure that the relaysdon’t rattle.) Interference may occurinternally if the gripping force of the tab ofthe surface mounting machine is toogreat. This could impair relayperformance.Bad example2. FLUX APPLICATION• Adjust the position of the PC board sothat flux does not overflow onto the top ofit. This must be observed especially fordust-cover type relays.• Use rosin-based non-corrosive flux.• If the PC board is pressed down into aflux-soaked sponge as shown on theright, the flux can easily penetrate a dust-cover type relay. Never use this method.Note that if the PC board is pressed downhard enough, flux may even penetrate aflux-resistant type relay.Bad example3. PREHEATING• Be sure to preheat before usingautomatic soldering. For dust-cover typerelays and flux-resistant type relays, preheating acts to prevent thepenetration of flux into the relay whensoldering. Solderability also improves.• Preheat according to the followingconditions.• Note that long exposure to hightemperatures (e.g. due to amalfunctioning unit) may affect relaycharacteristics.Temperature 120°C 248°F or lessTime Within approx. 2 minutes
