Before You BeginM-500 Appliance Quick StartThe Palo Alto Networks M-500 appliance is a multi-function appliance that you can configure for one of the followingthree modes:• Panorama mode—Performs both central management and log collection for Palo Alto Networks firewalls. This is thedefault mode.• Log Collector mode—Functions as a Dedicated Log Collector, which an M-Series appliance in Panorama mode or aPanorama virtual appliance can manage.• PAN-DB Private Cloud mode—Functions as a private URL filtering solution that Palo Alto Networks firewalls can use toperform URL filtering lookups. This solution is ideal for organizations that restrict their firewalls from having direct accessto the Internet. For more information, refer to the PAN-OS Administrator’s Guide 7.0 or later.Overview• Register the M-500 appliance at http://support.paloaltonetworks.com for access to the latest software updates and toactivate support.• Obtain an IP address from your network administrator for the management interface (MGT) and, optionally, obtain IPaddresses for port 1 (eth1) and port 2 (eth2) data ports.By default, all communication between the M-500 appliance and the firewalls occurs over the MGT interface. In ahigh-demand environment, you can configure Panorama to distribute traffic to eth1 and eth2 for various functionsthat Panorama performs. In PAN-DB mode, this applies to the MGT interface and port 1 (eth1) only. For moreinformation, refer to the Panorama Administrator’s Guide 7.0 or later.• Rack mount and power on the M-500 appliance as described in the M-500 Appliance Hardware Reference Guide.Perform the Initial ConfigurationStep 1 Change the IP address onyour management computer.This will enable your computerto access the default networkassigned to the MGT port.Step 2 Connect your managementcomputer to the appliance.Step 3 Change the admin passwordon the appliance.Step 4 Assign a new IP address to theMGT port and enablemanagement services.Step 5 Verify management access tothe appliance.1. Navigate to the Ethernet interface settings page on your computer.2. Set the IP address to 192.168.1.2 and the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0.3. Save the settings.1. Connect the Ethernet port on your computer to the management port (MGT) onthe appliance using an RJ-45 Ethernet cable (provided).2. Launch a web browser on your computer and enter https://192.168.1.1. Thelogin page for Panorama will appear.3. Type admin in both the Name and Password fields and then click Login.1. Click the admin link in the lower portion of the management console to displaythe password change prompt.2. Type the Old Password, type the New Password, and then re-type the newpassword in the Confirm New Password field. Click OK to save the newpassword.1. Select Panorama > Setup, then click the gear icon (Edit…) in theManagement Interface Settings section.2. Enter the new MGT port information (IP Address, Netmask, Default Gateway)for your management network.3. In the Services section, select the desired services. For the basic configuration,ensure that HTTPS and SSH are enabled and then click OK to save.4. Click Commit, select Panorama as the Commit Type, and click Commit again.1. Change the IP address on your computer back to the previous setting and thenplug your computer back into the enterprise management network.2. Open a browser and connect to the appliance using the IP address that youassigned to the MGT port. For example, if the MGT port IP address is 10.43.4.4,enter https://10.43.4.4.3.
