There will be a bed of orange coals in the fireboxand secondary flames flickering just below the top fire-brick. You can safely fill the firebox with wood to the topof the door and will get best burns if you keep the stovepipe temperatures between 250 degrees Fahrenheit (120degrees Celsius) and 450 degrees Fahrenheit (270 de-grees Celsius). A surface thermometer will help regu-late this.Without a stove thermometer, you are workingblindly and have no idea of how the stove is oper-ating! A stove thermometer offers a guide to per-formance.Can't get the fire going? Use more kindling and paper.Assuming the chimney and vent are sized correctly andthere is sufficient combustion air, the lack of sufficientlydry quantities of small kindling is the problem. Thumbsize is a good gauge for small kindling diameter. Can't get heat out of the unit? One of two things mayhave happened. The stove/insert door may have beenclosed prematurely and the unit itself has not reachedoptimum temperature. Reopen the door and/or draftcontrol to re-establish a brisk fire. The other problemmay have been wet wood. The typical symptom is siz-zling wood and moisture being driven from the wood.ACHIEVING PROPER DRAFTDraft is the force whichmoves air from the fireboxup through the chimney. The amount of draft in yourchimney depends on thelength and diameter ofchimney, local geography, nearby obstructions andother factors. Adjusting thedraft control regulates the temperature. The draft canbe adjusted from a low burn rate with the handle in fully,to a fast burn rate with the handle fully out.Inadequate draft may cause back-puffing into the roomthrough the stove/insert and chimney connector pointsand may cause plugging of the chimney. Too muchdraft may cause an excessive temperature in the stove, glowing red stove parts or chimney connectors or anuncontrollable burn which can lead to a chimney fire orpermanent damage to the unit.Do not operate your stove/insert for longer than 30 min-utes with the draft control on "HIGH" (fully open).FOLDINGHANDLEREARROTATEPULL ANDTO OPEN: ASH WELLCOVER ROTATETO CLOSE:FIRE EXTINGUISHERS / SMOKE DETECTORSAll homes with a solid fuel burning fireplace shouldhave at least one fire extinguisher in a central loca-tion known to all, and at least one smoke detector inthe room containing the fireplace. If it sounds analarm, correct the cause but do not deactivate orrelocate the smoke detector.FUEL LOADING AND BURN CYCLEWhen loading the stove, ensure that the two uppercourses of firebrick are not lifted up and off theirledge. For maximum efficiency, when the stove is thoroughlyhot, load it fully to the top of the door opening and burn ata medium low setting. Maximum heat for minium fuel (op-timum burn) occurs when the stove top temperature be-neath the trivet is between 500°F (260°C) and 600°F(315°C). The bricks will be nearly all white and the glassmostly clear. The whiteness of the bricks and the clean-ness of the glass are good indicators of your operatingefficiency. Not enough heat is produced when only oneor two pieces of wood are burned or the wood may notburn completely. A minimum of three pieces are neededto encase a bed of coals that sustains the fire.Loosely stacked wood burns quicker than a tightly packedload. Wood burns in cycles rather than giving a steadyoutput of heat. It is best to plan these cycles around yourhousehold routine so that only enough coals are left tostart the next load. In the evening, load your stove, atleast, a half-hour before bed to ensure a good fire, hotenough to close the draft control for an overnight burn.Burn only dry seasoned wood.It produces more heat and less soot or creosote. Do notburn ocean beach wood. Its salt content can produce ametal eating acid. When refueling open the door slowly toprevent smoke spillage. Use a pair of long gloves (barbe-cue gloves) when feeding the fire. Because these stovesburn at the front, they are clean and efficient, but they arealso very hot and gloves are useful. Keep a small steelshovel nearby to use as a poker and to remove ashes. Donot store the wood within 3 feet (1m) of the stove.FLASH FIREA flash fire is a small fire burned quickly when you don'tneed much heat. After your kindling has "caught", load atleast 3 pieces of wood, stacked loosely. Burn with thedraft control fully open or closed only slightly.EXTENDED FIRELoad your larger pieces of wood compactly, packed closeenough to prevent the flames from penetrating it completely. After approximately 30 minutes, depending on the size ofthe load, close the draft control completely making surethat the fire is not extinguished.* NOTE: 1100C ash pan isnot equipped with a coveror rear folding handle.FIGURE 26 PULL HANDLEFIGURE 25ASH FENDER
