6To install the bit, place it in the chuck as far as it will go.Tighten the chuck by hand. Place the chuck key in eachof the three holes and tighten clockwise. Be sure totighten all three chuck holes evenly. To remove the bit, turn the chuck key counterclockwisein just one hole, then loosen the chuck by hand. After using the chuck key, be sure to return to theoriginal position.OPERATIONHolding toolCAUTION:• This is a powerful tool. High torque is developedand it is important that the tool should be securelyheld and properly braced.Grasp the switch handle with one hand and the spadegrip with the other hand. When drilling a large hole with aself-feed bit, etc., the side grip (auxiliary handle) shouldbe used as a brace to maintain safe control of the tool. When drilling action is forward (clockwise), the toolshould be braced to prevent a counterclockwise reactionif the bit should bind. When reversing, brace the tool toprevent a clockwise reaction. If the bit must be removedfrom a partially drilled hole, be sure the tool is properlybraced before reversing.123400307812003079Drilling operationDrilling in woodWhen drilling in wood, the best results are obtained withwood drills equipped with a guide screw. The guidescrew makes drilling easier by pulling the bit into theworkpiece.Drilling in metalTo prevent the bit from slipping when starting a hole, make an indentation with a center-punch and hammer atthe point to be drilled. Place the point of the bit in theindentation and start drilling.Use a cutting lubricant when drilling metals. Theexceptions are iron and brass which should be drilleddry.CAUTION:• Pressing excessively on the tool will not speed upthe drilling. In fact, this excessive pressure will onlyserve to damage the tip of your bit, decrease thetool performance and shorten the service life of thetool.• There is a tremendous twisting force exerted onthe tool/bit at the time of hole breakthrough. Holdthe tool firmly and exert care when the bit begins tobreak through the workpiece.• A stuck bit can be removed simply by setting thereversing switch to reverse rotation in order to backout. However, the tool may back out abruptly if youdo not hold it firmly.• Always secure small workpieces in a vise or similarhold-down device.• Avoid drilling in material that you suspect containshidden nails or other things that may cause the bitto bind or break.MAINTENANCECAUTION:• Always be sure that the tool is switched off andunplugged before attempting to perform inspectionor maintenance.Replacing carbon brushes1001145Remove and check the carbon brushes regularly.Replace when they wear down to the limit mark.
