5Connecting to Makita vacuum cleanerCAUTION:• Always close the nozzle cap when the vacuumcleaner is not connected to the nozzle. Neverinsert your finger into the nozzle.Cleaner sanding operations can be performed byconnecting the belt sander to Makita vacuum cleaner.Fig.5When connecting to Makita vacuum cleaner, an optionalhose 28 mm in inner diameter is necessary.Fig.6When connecting to Makita dust collector (Model 420S),the hose of the dust collector is not necessary. You canconnect the belt sander directly to the optional hose 28.Fig.7OPERATIONCAUTION:• Secure the workpiece with clamps, etc. if there isany possibility of it moving during the workoperations.• The tool should not already be in contact with theworkpiece surface when you turn the tool on or off.Otherwise a poor sanding finish, damage to thebelt or loss of control of the tool may result.• When working with the tool, be very careful toavoid any contact of the tool and belt with any partof your body or anyone or anything near you.Always use the side grip (auxiliary handle) and firmlyhold the tool by both side grip and switch handle duringoperations. Turn the tool on and wait until it attains fullspeed. Gently apply the tool to the workpiece surfaceand move the tool forward and back. Press the belt onlylightly on the workpiece. Excessive pressure maydamage the belt and shorten tool life.MAINTENANCECAUTION:• Always be sure that the tool is switched off andunplugged before attempting to perform inspectionor maintenance.• Never use gasoline, benzine, thinner, alcohol or the like.Discoloration, deformation or cracks may result.Replacing carbon brushesFig.8Remove and check the carbon brushes regularly.Replace them when they are worn down to the limit mark.Keep the carbon brushes clean and free to slip in theholders. Both carbon brushes should be replaced at thesame time.
