17AIR FILTERYour engine will not run properly using a dirty air filter. Ser-vice air cleaner more often under dusty conditions.ENGINE COOLING SYSTEMTo ensure proper cooling, make sure the grass screen, cooling fins, and other external surfaces of the engine arekept clean at all times.Every 100 hours of operation (more often under extremelydusty, dirty conditions), remove the blower housing and othercooling shrouds. Clean the cooling fins and external surfacesas necessary. Ensure the cooling shrouds are reinstalled.NOTE: Operating the engine with a blocked grass screen, dirty or plugged cooling fins, and/or cooling shrouds removedwill cause engine damage due to overheating.SPARK PLUGSReplace spark plugs at the beginning of each mowingseason or after every 100 hours of operation, whicheveroccurs first. Spark plug type and gap setting are shown in“PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS” section of this manual.CLAMPFUEL FILTERCLAMPFig. 19MAINTENANCEMUFFLERInspect and replace corroded muffler and spark arrester (ifequipped) as it could create a fire hazard and/or damage.IN-LINE FUEL FILTER (See Fig. 19)The fuel filter should be replaced once each season. If fuelfilter becomes clogged, obstructing fuel flow to carburetor, replacement is required.• With engine cool, remove filter and plug fuel line sections.• Place new fuel filter in position in fuel line with arrowpointing towards carburetor.• Be sure there are no fuel line leaks and clamps areproperly positioned.• Immediately wipe up any spilled gasoline.ENGINE OIL FILTERReplace the engine oil filter every season or every other oilchange if the tractor is used more than 100 hours in one year.NOTE: If needed, remove lower dash covers using stepsfrom "Lower dash cover removal" section of this manual.CLEAN AIR SCREENThe air screen is over the air intake blower located on topof engine. The air screen must be kept free of dirt andchaff to prevent engine damage from overheating. Cleanwith a wire brush or compressed air to remove dirt andstubborn dried gum fibers.Fig. 20• Keep finished surfaces and wheels free of all gasoline, oil, etc.• Protect painted surfaces with automotive type wax.Except for the washout port (if equipped), we do notrecommend using a garden hose or pressure washer toclean the outside of your tractor unless the engine andtransmission are covered to keep water out. Water inengine or transmission will shorten the useful life of yourtractor. Use compressed air or a leaf blower to removegrass, leaves and trash from outside tractor and mower.CLEANING• Clean engine, battery, seat, finish, etc. of all foreignmatter.• Clean debris from steering plate. Debris can restrictclutch/brake pedal shaft movement, causing belt slipand loss of drive.
