29LUBRICATIONWARNING! To prevent burns, the engine should beshut off and allowed to cool slightly so the engine is stillwarm but the surrounding surfaces and oil are not.Engine oil changeNOTE: Change the engine oil when the engine is warm.Refer to the engine owner’s manual for the correctreplacement oil and filter change recommendations.1. Park on a level surface. Apply park brake.2. Clean the dirt and debris from the area around the oil fillcap.3. Remove the cap/dipstick.4. Locate the drain hose at the right rear of the engine. Placean adequately sized container under the end of the drainhose and remove the oil drain plug.Transaxle (Transmission) Fluid ChangeThis transaxle is designed with an external filter for easeof maintenance. To ensure constant fluid quality levels andlonger life, an oil filter change interval of every 200 hours isrecommended. The following procedure is performed with the transaxlesinstalled in the mower and the mower on level ground. Applythe pump release valve for each transaxle and set the parkbrake.1. Remove the three filter guard screws and filter guard.Clean any loose debris from around the perimeter of thefilter.2. Place an oil drain pan (12" or more diameter and 8 qt.capacity is optimal) beneath the oil filter. Remove the oilfilter from the transaxle.5. Allow the oil to fully drain from the engine.6. Replace the drain hose plug and tighten securely.7. Fill the engine with new oil to the bottom of the fill tubethreads. Check the level with the dipstick.8. Replace the oil fill cap securely when the oil level is FULL.9. Refer to the Service Journal for oil checking and changingintervals.3. After the oil has drained, wipe the filter base surface andapply a film of new oil to the gasket of the replacementfilter.4. Install the new filter by hand, turning it three-quarters toone full turn after the filter gasket contacts the filter basesurface.5. Reinstall the filter guard. Torque screws to65 in/lbs. each.6. Repeat steps on the opposite side.7. Drain old oil filters of all free flowing oil prior to disposal.Place used oil in appropriate containers and dispose of itin accordance with laws in your area.8. Remove the top port plug (see illustration) from the leftside and right side of the transaxles prior to filling with oil. This will allow the transaxles to vent during oil fill.9. Remove the cap from the transaxles’ expansion tanklocated on the vehicle frame.10. Fill with 20W50 motor oil until oil just appears at the bottomof each transaxles’ top port (approximately 2 quarts pertransaxle, 4 quarts total). Install the top port plug into eachtransaxle as the oil level reaches the port.11. Install and torque the top port plugs to 180 in./lbs.12. Continue to fill the transaxles through the expansiontank until the FULL COLD line is reached (this will takeapproximately 23 additional ounces).13. Reinstall the expansion tank cap by hand. Be careful tonot overtighten.
