18 – EnglishA muffler fitted with a catalytic converter reduces the extent ofthe following substances in the exhaust fumes:• Hydrocarbons (HC). Some hydrocarbons in gasoline and theexhaust are carcinogenic.• Nitric oxides (NO). Irritating for the breathing air-ways.• Aldehydes. The most common formaldehyde, is carcinogenicand causes hypersensitiveness.NOTE! The level of carbon monoxide is not reduced. This is anodourless and extremely poisonous substance. Therefore avoidexposure without good air circulation.MAINTENANCEMuffler with catalytic converterThe muffler is also designed todampen the noise level and todirect the exhaust fumes awayfrom the user. The exhaustfumes are hot and can containsparks, which can result in fireif the exhaust fumes aredirected towards a dry orinflammable material. Somemufflers are fitted with aspecial spark arrest screen. Ifyour machine is fitted with thistype of muffler then the screenshould be cleaned at leastonce a week. This is doneusing a wire brush. If thescreen is damaged in anyway it should be replaced. Ifthe screen is blocked this willresult in engine overheatingand damage to the cylinderand piston.NOTE!Never use a machine with adefective muffler.WARNING!The coating on/in the catalytic element can behazardous to health if consumed. Weargloves when carrying out service work on thecatalytic converter.WARNING!Mufflers fitted with catalytic convertersbecome extremely hot during use and afterstopping. This also applies at idling speeds.Contact can result in burns to the skin. Beobservant to the risk of fire!!!Cooling systemTo maintain as low operatingtemperature as possible theengine is equipped with acooling system. The cooling system consistsof:1. An air intake on the starterunit.2. Cooling fins on theflywheel.3. Cooling fins on thecylinder4. Cylinder cover (leads coldair onto the cylinder).Clean the cooling system usinga brush at least once a week,in difficult conditions moreoften.A dirty or blocked coolingsystem leads to the engineoverheating resulting indamage to the cylinder andpiston.14320,5 mmIf the machine is low on power, difficult to start or runspoorly while idling always check the spark plug first. If the spark plug is dirty, clean it and at the same time checkthat the electrode gap is 0.5 mm. The spark plug should bechanged after about one month of operation or earlier if neces-sary.NOTE! Always use the recommended type of spark plug. Anincorrect spark plug can damage the cylinder/piston.Spark plugThe condition of the sparkplug is affected by:• An incorrect carburetorsetting.• An incorrect fuel mixture(too much or faulty oil).• A dirty air filter. These factors causedeposits on the spark plugelectrode that may resultin malfunction or startingdifficulties.
