6Replacing Gateway M305 Componentswww.gateway.comBefore working with notebook components, follow these guidelines:■ Avoid static-causing surfaces such as carpeted floors, plastic, and packingfoam.■ Remove components from their antistatic bags only when you are readyto use them. Do not lay components on the outside of antistatic bagsbecause only the inside of the bags provide electrostatic protection.■ Always hold components by their edges. Avoid touching the edgeconnectors. Never slide components over any surface.Preparing the notebookTo prepare the notebook for maintenance:■ Make sure that the CD or DVD drive and the optional diskette drive oroptional card reader are empty.■ Disconnect all peripheral devices and remove any PC Cards.■ Turn off the notebook and unplug the power cord and modem and networkcables (if attached).■ Turn over the notebook and remove the battery. For more information,see “Removing the battery” on page 7.Warning To avoid exposure to dangerous electrical voltages andmoving parts, turn off the notebook, remove the battery,and unplug the power cord and modem and networkcables before opening the case. Replace the cover beforeyou restore power or reconnect the modem and networkcables.
