Because of thelarge number of hard drives on the market, it is essential to use only a Gatewayapproved drive firmware file. Different drive manufacturers have different methodsfor downloading drive firmware, sometimes requiring vendor-unique utilities toperform the download. Gateway rigorously tests drive firmware and creates a singledownload file that can be used through the controller. This eliminates the problemsassociated with host-based utilities and the possibility of permanently damaging ahard drive by downloading incorrect firmware.Caution We recommend that you backup data from any drivesbefore attempting a download. During the downloadprocess, it is essential that no drives be inserted orremoved, and that power is not switched off. If a drivefirmware download is interrupted, it is possible that thedrive will become unusable. For this reason, the controllerwill not download drive firmware in parallel to all drives, butone drive at a time. In this way, even if a power failureoccurs, the worst case scenario is one drive will bedamaged.
