Although you cannot run your computer for anextended period of time with a UPS, a UPS lets you run your computer longenough to save your work and shut down your computer normally. For moreinformation, see “Setting up an uninterruptible power supply” on page 120.Warning High voltages can enter your computer through both thepower cord and the modem connection. Protect yourcomputer by using a surge protector. If you have atelephone modem, use a surge protector that has amodem jack. If you have a cable modem, use a surgeprotector that has an antenna/cable TV jack. During anelectrical storm, unplug both the surge protector and themodem.
