Accessing the Answering System from Another LocationYou can also access your answering system from any phone that is tone-dialcompatible by entering a 3-digit security code after you hear the outgoingannouncement.NOTE: If the answering system memory is full, it answers after 10 rings, beepsand waits for you to enter the 3-digit security code. If you don’t enter the securitycode within 10 seconds, the phone hangs up.NOTE: The unit will hang up after 3 failed attempts to input correct securitycode.1. Dial the telephone number to which the answering system is connected to.2. Enter the security code after you hear the tone.3. Follow the voice menu to use the answering system’s remote functions.The remote feature lets you perform the following functions:To Press this ButtonReview message 1Play back message 2Stop message play back 2Erase message 0 (during message playback)Skip message 3Turn off/on answering system 4Review voice menu options 7TIP: You can bypass the outgoing announcement by pressing any numbered keyon the touch-tone pad while the announcement is playing. Then, you can enteryour security code to access the answering system.Changing the Security CodeThe default security code for accessing the answerer from another locationis 1 2 3. You must use the handset to change the security code. With the phoneOFF (not in TALK mode), follow these steps:1. Press trans/answer button.2. Press *exit.3. Enter the three numbers to be used as the new security code.4. Press *exit again.5. You will hear the new security code being repeated to confirm the change.Headset and Belt Clip OperationConnecting an Optional Headset to the HandsetFor Hands Free Operation:1. Connect the headset to the HEADSET jack on the side of the handset. Thehandset receiver and microphone are disabled when the headset is connected.2. Adjust the headset to rest comfortably on top of your head and over your ear.Move the microphone to approximately two to three inches from your mouth.3. Press the talk/end/call back button to answer a call or make calls using theheadset.4. To return to normal operation, unplug the headset from the jack.Connecting the Belt ClipTo attach the belt clip, insert the sides of the belt clip into the slots on each side ofthe handset. Snap the ends of the belt clip into place.Changing the BatteryCAUTION: To reduce the risk of fire or personal injury, only use theATLINKS Ni-CAD battery model 5-2548 that is compatible with this unit.1. Make sure the telephone is OFF before you replace battery.2. Remove the battery compartment door.3. Disconnect the battery plug from the jack inside the battery compartment andremove the battery pack from the handset.4. Insert the new battery pack and connect the batttery plug to the jack inside thehandset battery compartment.5. Put the battery compartment door back on.6. Place handset in the base to charge.7. Allow the handset battery to properly charge (for 16 hours) prior to first use orwhen you install a new battery pack. If you do not properly charge the phone,battery performance will be compromised.Deleting All Caller ID Records1. Make sure the phone is OFF (not in TALK mode).2. Press the Caller ID/vol ( + or - ) button until a Caller ID record is displayed.3. Press and hold del/chan until unit beeps. The display shows DELETE ALL?4. Press del/chan again to erase all records. The display shows NO CALLS.Changing the Number FormatThe FORMAT button lets you change the format of the displayed number. Theavailable formats are as follows.7-digit 7-digit telephone number.10-digit 3-digit area code + 7-digit telephone number.11-digit long distance code “1” + 3-digit area code + 7-digit telephone number.1. Make sure the phone is OFF (not in TALK mode).2. Use the Caller ID/vol ( + or - ) button to scroll to the number you want to call back.3. If the number does not dial as shown, press the format/mute button. Repeat ifnecessary, until the correct number of digits shows in the display and the call iscompleted.4. Press the talk/end/call back button.MemoryStore up to ten 24-digit numbers in memory for quick dialing. This memoryfeature is in addition to the 40 Caller ID records that can be stored in memory.Storing a Name and Number in Memory1. Make sure the phone is OFF (not in TALK mode).2. Press the mem button.3. Press a number (0-9) to store the dialed number in that memory location. Ifthe memory location is occupied, the memory location and stored name andnumber appear on the screen.NOTE: If the memory location is empty, “EMPTY” appears in the display.4. Press the mem button again. The display shows ENTER NAME.NOTE: If you don’t want to enter the name, skip step 5.5. Use the handset number keypad to enter a name (up to 15 characters). Morethan one letter is stored in each of the number keys. For example, to enter BillSmith, press the 2 key twice for the letter B. Press the 4 key 3 times for theletter I. Press the 5 key 3 times for the letter L, and wait for 1 second. Pressthe 5 key 3 times for the second letter L, and press the 1 key to insert a spacebetween the first and last name. Press the 7 key 4 times for the letter S; pressthe 6 key once for the letter M; press the 4 key 3 times for the letter I; press the8 key for the letter T; press the 4 key twice for the letter H.NOTE: If you make a mistake press the chan/erase button to backspace anderase the wrong character(s) or number(s).6. Press the mem button again to save the name. The display shows ENTER NUMBER.7. Use the handset number keypad to enter the telephone number (up to 24 digits,including pauses) and press the mem button again to save the number. Theunit beeps to confirm.NOTE: If the memory location is occupied, “REPLACE MEMO?” is displayed, andyou must confirm replacement by pressing the memory button, you will hear aconfimation tone. If you DO NOT want to replace number in memory location,press the *exit button.8. To enter another name and number in a different memory location, return tostep 1 and repeat the process.Storing/Replacing a Redial Number in MemoryNOTE: If the redial number has more than 24 digits, the redial number cannotbe stored in memory.1. Repeat steps 1 through 6 in Storing a Name and Number in Memory.2. Press the redial button to display the redial number and name.3. Press the mem button to store the number. You will hear a confirmation tone.NOTE: If the memory location is occupied, “REPLACE MEMO?” is displayed, andyou must confirm replacement by pressing the memory button, you will hear aconfimation tone. If you DO NOT want to replace number in memory location,press the *exit button.Storing/Replacing Caller ID Records in MemoryNOTE: Caller ID record should be in correct format for dialing as record cannotbe changed once it is stored in memory location.1. Make sure the phone is OFF (not in TALK mode).2. Press the Caller ID/vol ( + or - ) button until the desired Caller ID record is displayed.3. Press the mem button.4. Press a number key (0-9) to store the dialed number in that memory location.You will hear a confirmation tone. Example, press the number 1 key to storethe record in memory location 1.NOTE: If the memory location is occupied, “REPLACE MEMO?” is displayed, andyou must confirm replacement by pressing the memory button, you will hear aconfimation tone. If you DO NOT want to replace number in memory location,press the *exit button.Dialing a Stored Number1. Make sure the phone is ON by pressing the talk/end/call back button.2. Press the mem button.3. Press the number (0-9) for the desired memory location. The number dialsautomatically.OR1. Make sure the phone is OFF (not in TALK mode).2. Press the mem button.3. Use the Caller ID/vol ( + or - ) button to scroll through the numbers stored inmemory until the desired number is shown.4. Press talk/end/call back. The number dials automatically.Chain Dialing from MemoryUse this feature to make calls which require a sequence of numbers, such asusing a calling card for a frequently called long distance number. You simply dialeach part of the number sequence from memory. The following example showshow you can use chain dialing to make a call through a long distance service:The Number For Memory LocationLong distance access number 7Authorization code 8Frequently called long distance number 91. Make sure the phone is ON by pressing the TALK/call back button.2. Press the mem button and then press the 7 key.3. When you hear the access tone, press mem again and then press the 8 key.4. At the next access tone, press mem and then the 9 key.TIP: Wait for the access tones before pressing the mem button, or your callmight not go through.Inserting a Pause in the Dialing SequencePress the #pause button once to insert a delay in the dialing sequence of a storedtelephone number. A pause is needed to wait for a dial tone (for example afteryou dial 9 for an outside line, or to wait for a computer access tone). Each pausecounts as 1 digit in the dialing sequence.Reviewing and Deleting Stored Numbers1. Press the mem button.2. Use the Caller ID/vol ( + or - ) button to scroll to the desired memory location orpress the desired memory location (0-9).3. While the entry is displayed, press the del/chan button to delete the entry. Thedisplay shows DELETE?.4. Press del/chan again to confirm. The display shows DELETED. You will hear aconfirmation tone.Answering System OperationThis section explains the buttons and features of the answering system.Messages IndicatorThe MESSAGES indicator shows you how many messages you have. It blinksif there are new messages. The ans on/off button must be ON in order for theMESSAGES indicator to work.NOTE: The answering system displays “- -” when it is off.Screening Calls from the BaseYou may screen incoming calls by waiting for the caller to begin leaving amessage (to hear who it is), then pick up the handset, and press talk/end/call backto speak to the caller. The answering system automatically stops recording whenyou activate the handset or pick up an extension phone.TIP: Make sure the volume on the base is set loud enough for you to hear yourincoming calls.Screening Calls from the HandsetUse the handset to screen calls even when you can’t hear the answering system.When the answering system picks up:1. Press the trans/answer button to access the answering system.2. Listen as the caller leaves a message.3. Press the talk/end/call back button to speak to the person or press the trans/answer button to stop screening the call.Message PlaybackThe messages indicator lets you know when you have messages. To playmessages, press the play/stop button.While a message is playing, you can do the following:• Press the play/stop button to stop the message playback.• Press and release the review button to restart the current message; continue topress and release the review button to go to previous messages.• Press and release the skip button to go to the next message.• Press and release the delete button to erase current message.Memory FullWhen the answering system memory is full, the base unit displays an F and thesystem answers after 10 rings. You should erase some messages so the answeringsystem may record new messages.NOTE: The maximum recording time of an incoming message is about 3minutes per each and the total allowable recording time is about 11minutes.Erasing MessagesYou may erase messages three ways: one message at a time from the base; allmessages from the base; or one message at a time from the handset or a phonein another location.1. To erase one message at a time from the base:• Press play/stop. The message plays.• Press and release the delete button.2. To erase all reviewed messages from the base:• Press and hold the delete button until the unit beeps.3. To erase a message from the handset:• Press trans/answer button to enter into the handset remote accessoperation.• Press play/stop on the handset (the 2 button). The message plays.• Press delete (the 0 button) to erase the message during message playback.NOTE: Erased messages cannot be restored. Be careful when pressing the erasebutton because if the next unheard message has started to play, it will also beerased.Leaving a MemoUse the memo feature to leave a message.1. Press and hold the memo button on the base. You must hold the button downuntil you finish recording the memo.2. Begin speaking after you hear the beep.3. Release the memo button when you are finished.Remote AccessThis section explains two types of remote access: using the handset to access theanswering system and accessing the answering system from another phone.Cordless HandsetThe handset contains integrated buttons that enables you to access the answeringmachine with the handset.1. Press the trans/answer button to access the answering system.2. Use the corresponding handset keys just like you would use the base buttons(see “Answering System Setup”). The button functions are located on thehandset below each number key. For example, to play messages:• Press the trans/answer button. The display shows ANSWERER REMOTE.• Press 2 (play/stop).• When you are finished listening to your messages, press the trans/answerbutton again.Handset Sound SignalsSignal MeaningA long warbling tone (with ringer on) Signals an incoming callThree short beeps (several times) Page signalSingle beep every 7 seconds Low battery warningTwo short beeps Error toneDisplay and Caller ID MessagesThe following indicators show the status of a message or of the unit.ANSWERER REMOTE Indicates the answering machine is being accessedremotely.BLOCKED CALL The call is coming from a number that has beenblocked from transmission.BLOCKED NAME The caller’s name is blocked from transmission.CALL WAITING Indicates a call is waiting on the line.DELETE ALL? Prompt asking if you want to erase all Caller IDrecords.DELETE CALL ID? Prompt asking if you want to erase a Caller ID record.DELETED Prompt confirming the Caller ID record is erased.EMPTY Indicates a memory location is vacant.END OF LIST Indicates that there is no additional information inCaller ID memory.ENTER NAME Prompt telling you to enter the name for one of the 10memory locations.ENTER TEL NUMBR Prompt telling you to enter the telephone number forone of the 10 memory locations.ERROR Caller information is interrupted during transmission,or the phone is excessively noisy.INCOMPLETE DATA Caller information has been interrupted duringtransmission or the telephone line is excessively noisy.LONG DISTANCE Indicates the CID record is a long distance number.LOW BATTERY Indicates the battery needs to be charged.NEW Indicates call or calls have not been reviewed.NO CALLS Indicates no calls have been received.NO DATA No Caller ID information was received.PAGING The PAGE button has been pressed on the base.PLEASE REGISTER Handsets have not been previously registered.Once the handsets have completed registrationsuccessfully, HANDSET 1 and HANDSET 2 will showon the handset’s display.PRESS TALK KEY Indicates the CID number is a Direct Dial Number(DDN) and cannot be formatted.REPT Repeat call message. Indicates that a new call fromthe same number was received more than once.TRANSFERRING The handset is transferring a call or receiving notice toaccept a transferred call.UNAVAILABLE Indicates other handset is off-hook or accessinganswerer.UNKNOWN NAME/ The incoming call is from an area not serviced byCALLER/NUMBER Caller ID or the information was not sent.Answering System Display MessagesThe following indicators show the status of the answering machine.- - Answerer off.0-59 Total number of messages.An (blinking) Currently answering a call.CL (blinking) The voice time/day stamp needs set.F (blinking) Memory is full.LA (Line Access) External line remote answerer.Six bars (blinking) Recording a memo or announcement.Troubleshooting GuideCordless Phone SolutionsNo dial tone• Check installation:Make sure the base power cord is connected to a working electrical outlet.Make sure the telephone line cord is connected to the base unit and the wallphone jack.• Connect another phone to the same modular jack; if the second phone doesn’twork, the problem might be with your wiring or local service.• The handset may be out of range of the base. Move closer to the base.• Make sure the battery is properly charged (for 16 hours).• Ensure the battery pack is installed correctly.• Did the handset beep when you pressed the talk/end/call back button? Did thecharge/in use indicator come on? The battery may need to be charged.• Place the handset in the base for at least 20 seconds.Handset does not ring• Make sure the RINGER switch on the handset is turned ON.• Move closer to the base. The handset may be out of range.• You may have too many extension phones on your line. Try unplugging somephones.• Check for a dial tone.You experience static, noise, or fading in and out• Change channels.• Move closer to base. The handset might be out of range.• Relocate the base. Make sure base is not plugged into an electrical outlet withanother household appliance.• Charge the battery.Unit beeps• Place handset in base for 20 seconds; if it still beeps, charge battery for 16 hours.• Clean the charging contacts on handset and base with a soft cloth.• See solutions for “No dial tone.”• Replace the battery.Memory Dialing doesn’t work• Make sure you programmed the memory location keys correctly.• Did you follow proper dialing sequence?Phone dials in pulse with tone service• Make sure phone is in tone dialing mode.Phone won’t dial out with pulse service• Make sure phone is in pulse dialing mode.Caller ID SolutionsNo Display• The battery must be fully charged. Try replacing the battery.• Make sure that the unit is connected to a non-switched electrical outlet.Disconnect the unit from the wall and plug it in again.• You must be subscribed to Caller ID service from your local telephone companyin order to receive Caller ID records.Caller ID Error Message• The unit displays this message if it detects anything other than valid Caller IDinformation during the silent period after the first ring. If you take no action for a period of time, the systemautomatically hangs up.Causes of Poor Reception• Aluminum siding.• Foil backing on insulation.• Heating ducts and other metal construction that can shield radio signals.• You’re too close to appliances such as microwaves, stoves, computers, etc.• Atmospheric conditions, such as strong storms.• Base is installed in the basement or lower floor of the house.• Base is plugged into AC outlet with other electronic devices.• Baby monitor is using the same frequency.• Handset battery is low.• You’re out of range of the base.• Microwave oven is using the same frequency.General Product CareTo keep your telephone working and looking good, follow these guidelines:• Avoid putting the phone near heating appliances and devices that generateelectrical noise (for example, motors or fluorescent lamps).• DO NOT expose to direct sunlight or moisture.• Avoid dropping the unit and other rough treatment.• Clean with a soft cloth.• Never use a strong cleaning agent or abrasive powder because this willdamage the finish.• Retain the original packaging in case you need to ship the phone at a later date.• Periodically clean the charge contacts on the handset and base with a soft cloth.ServiceIf trouble is experienced with this equipment, for repair or warranty information,please contact customer service at 1-800-448-0329.
