32 D - Refrigeration SystemCAUTIONIf you use a vacuum pump with mineral oil toevacuate an R-134a system, it is ABSOLUTELYESSENTIAL to have a shut-off valve betweenpump and your manifold gauge set as shownin Figure E2. The hand valve must be closedduring all times when vacuum pump isnot operating. This will prevent migrationof mineral oil vapor into R134a/Ester oilsystem. If vacuum pump should stop duringevacuation for any reason, the hand pumpshut-off valve must be closed immediately.Refrigerant LeaksA system with R-134a and Ester oil will becomesaturated with moisture much faster than a systemwith R-12 and mineral oil. If your leak was in thelow side of the refrigeration system when thecompressor is running the pressure in the low sidewill go into a vacuum. As additional refrigerantleaks out the system will go deeper into a vacuum. The system running in this vacuum will allow airand moisture to be pulled into the sealed system. The moisture pulled in can then be mixed in to theEster oil in the compressor. If the product has had a low side leak you will needto install the two stage service dryer filter partnumber 5303918288. You must heat the crankcasearea of the compressor using a heat gun on thehigh heat setting though out the 30 minutes you arerunning your vacuum pump to pull a vacuum on thesystem. Every 4 to 5 minutes while you are runningyour vacuum pump and heating the crankcase areashake the compressor. By heating the crank- caseyou are heating the oil in the compressor. This willdrive the moisture out of the oil. By shaking thecompressor this will allow the moisture to come tothe top of the oil faster so the vacuum pump canremove the moisture from the system.Electrolux Home Products does not approvethe use of the Sweep Charge for sealed systemrepair. This method of servicing sealed systemswe know is often used to repair products in thefield. The Sweep Charge does not adequatelyremove the moisture from the oil in the compressor. In a R-134a system you will need to replaced thecompressor if the product has had a low side leakand you are servicing with the Sweep Chargeprocedure.R-134a refrigerant molecules are smaller than R-12molecules. This means that R-134a will pass moreminor leaks and the rate of flow will be greaterthan for R-12. Therefore, it is now more importantthan ever to follow good brazing practices. Use agood grade of silver solder. 45% silver solder isrecommended.Evacuating and Recharging ConnectionsFigureE4
