BRAKE ADJUSTMENT1. Stop the unit, turn the ignition OFE set the groundspeed levers to PARK positions, and wait for allmoving parts to stop.2. Locate the brake rod (A, Figure 32) and adjustmentnut (B).3. Measure the parking brake spring (E). Itscompressed length, with the ground speed levers intheir PARK positions should be 3" (7.62cm). Adjustthe spring length by turning the adjustment nut (B), ifnecessary.BATTERY CHARGINGWARNINGCorrosion hazard.Batteries contain acid. Always keep thebattery upright and do not spill theelectrolyte. Avoid contact with skin andeyes.Explosion hazard.Changing the battery produces explosivehydrogen gas. Only charge the battery in awell ventilated area, away from any ignitionsource such as a water heater, electricmotor, or lit cigarette.Wear Protective EquipmentAlways wear gloves and safety glasseswhen handling the battery and batterycables.A dead battery or one too weak to start the engine maybe the result of a defect in the charging system or otherelectrical component. If there is any doubt about thecause of the problem, contact a Sears Parts & RepairCenter. If you need to replace the battery, follow thesteps under Cleaning the Battery & Cables in theRegular Maintenance Section.To charge the battery, follow the instructions provided bythe battery charger manufacturer as well as all warningsincluded in the safety rules sections of this book. Chargethe battery until fully charged (until the specific gravity ofthe electrolyte is 1.250 or higher and the electrolytetemperature is at least 60 ° F). Do not charge at a ratehigher than 10 amps.ENGINE ADJUSTMENTSThe engine is designed to deliver the correctperformance under all operating conditions.
