12OPERATIONChoke ControlActivating the choke control closes the choke plate on carburetor and aids instarting engine. The choke lever slides or rotates between the RUN and CHOKEpositions.Recoil Starter HandleThis handle is used to manually start the engine.Throttle controlThe throttle control is located on the rear of the engine.It regulates the speed of the engine and will shut off theengine when moved into the STOP position.PrimerDepressing the primer forces fuel directly into the engine’s carburetor to aid incold-weather starting.Electric Starter ButtonPressing the electric starter button engages the engine’s electric starter whenplugged into a 120V power source.Meets ANSI Safety StandardsCraftsman Snow Throwers conform to the safety standard of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).Now that you have set up your snow thrower, it’s important to become acquaintedwith its controls and features. Refer to Figure 17.Shift LeverThe shift lever is located on the right side of the handle panel. Place the shift leverinto any of eight positions to control the direction of travel and ground speed.ForwardYour snow thrower has six forward (F) speeds. Position one (1) is the slowest andposition six (6) is the fastest.ReverseYour snow thrower has two reverse (R) speeds. One (1) is the slower and two (2) isthe faster.Safety KeyThe safety key is a safety device. It must be fully insertedin order for the engine to start. Remove the safety keywhen the snow thrower is not in use.NOTE: Do not turn the ignition safety key in an attempt tostart the engine.
