4 - EnglishGENERAL sAFETY RULEs Always wear eye protection with side shieldsmarked to comply with ANSI Z87.1, alongwith hearing and head protection.KIcKBAcKSee Figures 1 - 3. WARNING: Kickback may occur when themoving chain contacts an object at the upperportion of the tip of the guide bar or when thewood closes in and pinches the saw chain inthe cut. Contact at the upper portion of thetip of the guide bar can cause the chain todig into the object and stop the chain for aninstant. The result is a lightning fast, reversereaction which kicks the guide bar up andback toward the operator. If the saw chain ispinched along the top of the guide bar, theguide bar can be driven rapidly back towardthe operator. Either of these reactions cancause loss of saw control which can result inserious injury. Do not rely exclusively uponthe safety devices built into the saw. As achain saw user, you should take several stepsto keep your cutting jobs free from accidentor injury. The following precautions should be fol-lowed to minimize kickback:• Hold the saw firmly with both hands whenthe motor is running. Place your right handon the rear handle and your left hand on thefront handle with your thumbs and fingersencircling the chain saw handles. A firm griptogether with a stiff left arm will help youmaintain control of the saw if kickback oc-curs.• Make sure that the area in which you are cut-ting is free from obstructions. Do not let thenose of the guide bar contact a log, branch, fence, or any other obstruction that could behit while you are operating the saw.• Always cut with the unit running at full speed.Fully squeeze the throttle trigger and maintaina steady cutting speed.• Use replacement parts such as low kickbackchain and special guide bars that reduce therisks associated with rotational kickback.Use only the replacement guide bars and lowkickback chains specified by the manufacturerfor the saw. With a basic understanding of kickback, youcan reduce or eliminate the element of sur-prise. Sudden surprise contributes to acci-dents. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Do not cut above shoulder height or overreachwhen cutting. Follow the sharpening and maintenance in-structions for the saw chain. Push and Pull - This reaction force is alwaysopposite to the direction the chain is mov-ing where wood contact is made. Thus, theoperator must be ready to control the PULLwhen cutting on the bottom edge of the bar,and PUSH when cutting along the top edge.See Figure 3.IN THE cUTTING/WORK AREA Do not operate a chain saw in a tree, on aladder, rooftop or scaffold; this is extremelydangerous. Keep ALL children, bystanders, visitors, andanimals out of the work area while starting orcutting with the chain saw.NOTE: The size of the work area depends onthe job being performed as well as the sizetree or work piece involved. For example, felling a tree requires a larger work area thanmaking bucking cuts. Never start cutting until you have a clear workarea, secure footing, and a planned retreatpath from the falling tree. Cluttered area inviteinjuries. Do not expose the chain saw to rain. Do not use the chain saw in damp or wetlocations. Do not use the chain saw near flammable liq-uids, gases, or in any type of explosive atmo-sphere. Use extreme caution when cutting small sizebrush and saplings, because slender mate-rial may catch the saw chain and be whippedtoward you or pull you off balance.
