When glue is properlyapplied to a spline and to the joint area of the woodpieces being connected, a large surface area receivesthe adhesion properties of the glue. This forms a verystrong joint.Traditional spline joinery requires cutting slots with arouter or table saw. Small, thin strips of wood mustthen be cut to fit inside the slots and act as splines.Newer methods of spline joinery use a plate or biscuitjoiner to cut precise mating oval slots in adjoiningboards. Your new Biscuit Joiner is a fast, simple, andaccurate plunge cutting tool that can be used for thispurpose. It can be used to cut slots in hardwood,softwood, plywood, particle board, and other pressedwoods.3Football shaped wafers, called biscuits, are thenplaced inside the slots with glue and used to help lineup adjoining surfaces. When a water based glue isused, the biscuits swell in the joint, making an ex-tremely strong and firm bond. White glue, yellow glue,carpenters glue, hide glue, and aliphatic resin glue areexamples of water based glues.This bonding technique has traditionally been limitedto making edge-to-edge joints. However, with the useof your new Biscuit Joiner, biscuits can now be easilyused to connect butt, miter, and T-joints. Biscuitjoining can be as strong as mortise and tenon, tongueand groove, standard spline, and doweled joints. Inmost cases the material around the biscuit will breakbefore the biscuit itself will break. A greater surfacearea is exposed to glue in a biscuit joint, making theseams stronger. |
