Afterthe sparkplug is seated,tightenwith a spark plugwrenchtocompressthe washer.NOTE:Wheninstallinga newsparkplug,tighten 1/2-turnafter thespark plugseatsto compressthe washer.Whenreinstallinga usedspark plug,tighten 1/8-to 1/4-turnafter the sparkplug seatstocompressthe washer.Thespark plug mustbe tightenedsecurely.A loosespark plug canbecomevery hotand can damagethe engine.Cleaning the EngineIf the engine hasbeen running,allowit to cool for at least halfan hourbeforecleaning.Periodicallyremovedirt build-upfromengine.Beforeservicingthe engine,removethecarburetorcover and/orblowerhousing.Cleanthe dirt and debrisfromthe followingareas:• CoolingFins• Air IntakeScreenor RecoilStarter/FlywheelGuardAreas• SparkPlugConnection• Levers• LinkageArea• Guards• Carburetor• EngineHeadRemovingdebriswill insureadequatecooling,correctenginespeedand reducethe riskof fire.Do not spraythe enginewithwater to cleanit becausethewatercouldcontaminatethe fuel. Usinga gardenhoseor pressurewashingequipmentcanalso forcewater intothe muffleropening.Waterthatpassesthroughthe mufflercan entertheenginecylinderand causedamage.Accumulationof debrisaroundthe mufflercouldcausea fire. Inspectand cleanbeforeever_use.LUBRICATIONLubricatethe pivot pointson the controlhandleand the extensionspringat the end of thecontrol cablewith a lightoil onceeveryseasonand beforethe snow throweris putinto storageatthe end of theseason.ADJUSTMENTSShave PlateTocheckthe adjustmentof the shaveplate,placethe machineon alevel surface.Thewheels,shaveplateand augerpaddlesshouldallcontactthe levelsurface.Notethat if the shaveplateis adjustedtoohigh, snowmay blowunderthe auger housing.If the shaveplatewearsout excessively,or the snowthrowerdoesnot self-propel,the shaveplate maybe too low to the groundand needsto be adjusted.NOTE: On newsnow throwersor machineswith a newshaveplateinstalled,the auger paddlesmay be slightlyoff the ground.Toadjust the shaveplate )roceedas follows:1. Runthe snowthroweruntilthe fueltank is empty.2. Pullthe startercorduntil resistanceis felt.Then tip the snowthrowerback untilit restson the handles.To ensurethat the snowthrowerdoesnot tip forward,it maybe necessaryto securethehandleto the groundwith a block or other object.3. Loosenthefourflangelocknutsand carriagescrewswhichsecurethe shaveplatetothe housing.SeeFigure14.Movethe shaveplateto theappropriatepositionand retightenthenuts andscrewssecurely.ReversibleShavePlateFigure14,J4. Tip the snowthrowerback to theoperatingpositionand pull thestarterhandlea few timesto see if it is difficultto pull.5. If the starteris difficultto pull,removethe spark plugand pull thehandle severaltimesto ensurethat anyoil trappedin theenginehead is removed.Oil maycome out of the sparkplug hole whenit is removedand thestarterhandle ispulled.6. Inspectthe spark plug.If it is wet, cleanoff any oil beforere-installing.14
