This self-regulatoryinitiative is driven by imaging equipment manufacturers and was endorsed by theEuropean Commission in January 2013 as equivalent to a binding regulation. The VAsets targets for reducing the energy consumption of printing and copying in the EUand addresses not only energy conservation, but also resource efficiency aspects, useaspects of ink, toner and paper and their recycling. In 2014, the 16 signatories to EuroVAprint agreed new targets as VA v.5.2. Effective on1st January 2015, 70% of TEC (typical energy consumption) and 90% of OM(operational mode) products placed on the EU market must qualify for EU ENERGYSTAR® 2.0 and the targets increased by two further increments from January 2016 andJanuary 2017.The VA includes concrete commitments on energy; paper savings andoptions (duplex enabled by default); recycled paper*1; spare parts; and informationon end-of-life options for consumables. Under the VA, manufacturers also give explicitguidance to users on using printing paper responsibly.Under the VA V.5.2 onwards, for new models placed on the EU market after 1 January2015, signatories will make spare parts available (if these are offered) for a minimumof five years for laser products and three years for inkjet products after productionceases.
