Suggested ElectrodePlacement ChartThe sticky electrode pads need tobe placed in the correct positionfor maximum pain relief. It is pref-erable to obtain assistance fromeither your birthing partner ormedical adviser when positioningthe pads. Please read the followinginstructions carefully:1. Ensure unit remains switchedoff. Carefully peel the pads fromthe plastic backing using yourforefinger and thumb. Do not pullon the lead wires.2. Position the top two pads(connected to the left socket CH1)approximately 4cm either side ofthe spine and 4-5cm above theimaginary navel line as seen in thediagram.3. Position the bottom two pads(connected to the right socketCH2) approximately 4cm eitherside of the spine and 4-5cm belowthe imaginary navel line as seen inthe diagram.Reference: Cluett E. Check batteries.Call our customer careline on+44 (0)208 5329 5959.Using Your Obi TENS+a) You are now ready to startusing your Obi TENS+.Switch the unit on by pressingthe on/off button. The ObiTENS+ will always start up inBURST 1 mode.b) Begin by pressing theCH1+ key. Each time you pressthis key, a small ‘half-moon’shape will appear on thescreen increasing in numberand size as the intensity isincreased. You will begin to feela pulsating sensation which willburst in time with the smallarrow flashing on the screen.Ensure that you increase theintensity slowly.c) Repeat the previous step withthe CH2+ key. You willnow feel a sensation in bothsets of pads.d) BURST 1 (use betweencontractions): This is thefirst mode that you will use.It feels like a bursting, tinglingsensation i.e. the pulses areoff and on periodically. Thismode will help to promotethose all-important naturalpain-killing chemicals known as‘endorphins’ and ‘encephalins’.e) BOOST 1 (use duringcontractions): Whenexperiencing a contraction,simply press the ‘boost’ buttonlocated on the left side belowthe screen. The Obi TENS+ willthen switch automatically intothe BOOST 1 mode for thatextra surge of power requiredto combat the pain duringcontractions. This will feel likea continuous sensation.f) Once the contraction haspassed, simply press the‘BOOST’ button. The ObiTENS+ will return to theoriginal BURST 1 mode.Continue this cycle during yourearly stages of labour.Useful Information1. Continue stimulation for aslong as necessary, unless youexperience discomfort.2. If you stimulate for a numberof hours ensure the pads donot become dry. If this occurs,switch off the unit, disconnectthe electrodes, and apply asmall drop of water to them.3. The pads can be used severaltimes. Replace the pads whenthey stop sticking to the skin.Replacement pads are availablefrom www.babycaretens.com.4. Always ensure that the unit isswitched off before you removeall the leads and pads. Do notpull the wires. ALWAYS removethe jack plug from its socketby holding the plug betweenthe forefinger and thumb andpulling gently.5. The Obi TENS+ can also beused as a standard TENSunit for relief of numerousconditions, including after painsand post operative pains. It isworth bearing this in mind ifyou have a caesarean section.Please seek medical advice first.Post-Natal Pad PlacementDiagramsKEY:= first pair of electrodes= second pair of electrodesN.B. Electrodes supplied with thisunit are all the same colour - theblack and white squares showsuggested electrode placement only.Using the BetweenContraction Timer (BCT) timerWhen in BURST mode, the unitautomatically measures your BCT.This appears at the bottom ofthe display. When you switch toBOOST, the last BCT will remain atthe bottom of the display. The BCTwill always refresh when re-enteringthe BURST mode from the BOOSTmode and will record the next BCT.N.B. The Obi TENS+ starts up inBURST Mode. The BCT only appearsafter one cycle of pressing the BoostButton on and off.Recalling contraction historyTo recall a list of your last 5 ‘BCTs’press the CH1- and CH2-buttons simultaneously. The 1stsymbol you will see is a singlemoon which is the last BCT.Use CH2+ to reveal up to 5BCTs . Use CH2- toreview more recent BCTs. Recallingthe contraction history will notdisable functionality of the unit. Toreturn to the main screen press theCH1- and CH2- buttonssimultaneously.N.B. To avoid losing contractionhistory, do NOT switch unit off.Remove the battereis if you wish toreset the contraction history.The Mode ButtonThere are two modes available onthe Obi TENS+, each with a BURSTand BOOST function.Mode 1 (Burst 1 and Boost 1),which has been described above, isprimarily used for the earlier stagesof labour.Mode 2 (Burst 2 and Boost 2) canbe used when your labour advancesand your contractions becomemore frequent.Press the Mode button toswitch between modes. You willsee from the User Display, thatthe number next to the BURST orBOOST will change from 1 to 2 andvice-versa.NB. Both modes are interchangeableand can be used according to yourpreference, not necessarily for thestage of labour you are in.
