46 47BICYCLEASSEMBLYBICYCLEASSEMBLYTIRE VALVESThe tire valve allows air to enter the tire’ s inner tubeunder pressure, but doesn’ t let it back out unless youwant it to.There are primarily two kinds of bicycle tube valves(actually, there are other designs, but they are seldomseen in the US anymore): The Schrader Valve and thePresta Valve. The bicycle pump you use must have theitting appropriate to the valve stems on your bicycle. The Schrader (Shown) is like the valve on a car tire. Toinlate a Schrader valve tube, just remove the valve capand push the air hose or pump itting onto the end of thevalve stem. To let air out of a Schrader valve, depress thepin in the end of the valve stem with the end of a key orother appropriate object. The Presta (Shown) has a narrower diameter and is onlyfound on bicycle tires. To inlate a Presta valve tube usinga Presta headed bicycle pump, remove the valve cap;unscrew (counterclockwise) the valve stem lock nut; andpush down on the valve stem to free it up. Then push thepump head on to the valve head, and inlate. To inlatea Presta valve with a gas station air hose, you’ll need aPresta adapter (available at your bike shop) which screwson to the valve stem once you’ve freed up the valve. Theadapter its the end of the air hose itting.SHRADER VALVEPRESTA VALVEFlat wheel braceTrainingwheelBracestabilizerwasherAxle nutInner axleInner axle nutDO NOT REMOVETrainingwheelWheelbraceAxle nutWasherStabilizer bracketFIG.
