Appendix D: Using the Adaptec Flash Utility for DOS ● 79IntroductionThe AFU is a text-based DOS utility used to update, save, or verify your HostRAID controller’sfirmware BIOS and Non-Volatile Random Access Memory (NVRAM).The AFU is easy to use and contains safeguards to prevent you from accidentally damaging theHostRAID controller’s flash contents. Still, you must be careful to use the AFU correctly,otherwise, you could render the HostRAID controller inoperable.System RequirementsThe requirements for AFU are as follows:● MS–DOS version 5.0 or later. It cannot run from a DOS command prompt window underany version of Windows.Note: You can’t run the AFU from a DOS command prompt window under any version of Windows.● At least 8 MB of extended memory.Compatibility InformationThe AFU has the following compatibility issues:● Supports HIMEM.SYS and is compatible with other DOS drivers running underHIMEM.SYS (for example, SMARTDRV.SYS and SETVER.SYS).● Does not support DOS extenders installed in memory, such as EMM386.SYS andDOS4GW.Before You BeginBefore running the AFU, complete these tasks:● Obtaining the Firmware on page 79● Creating the Firmware Kit On Floppy Disks on page 80Obtaining the FirmwareTo obtain HostRAID controller firmware, go to:The HostRAID Installation CD—Includes the AFU executable (AFU.exe) and a separate flashimage.
