6 IntroductionCompactPCI Bus InterfaceThe cPCI-6810/6820 operates in a 6U CompactPCI system. TheCompactPCI standard is electrically identical to the PCI local busstandard but has been enhanced to work in harsh environmentsand support more peripheral slots. Additionally, when used in ahot-swap compliant backplane and in accordance with theCompactPCI Hot Swap Specification, PICMG 2.1, Version 1.0, thecPCI-6810/6820 supports hosting hot-swappable peripherals in apowered system. The cPCI-6810/6820 can also function in astandard (non-hot-swap) CompactPCI system without liveinsertion and extraction capability.PCI-to-PCI BridgeThe HiNT HB6 is a tri-mode universal PCI-to-PCI Bridge and isused to implement the system/peripheral slot on the cPCI-6810/6820. The three-mode bridge is capable of operating inTransparent, Non-Transparent, or Universal mode. The HB6 Non-Transparent mode permits independent memory mapping of bothprimary and secondary buses with powerful configuration optionsto support intelligent subsystems. The Universal mode permitsjumper-less configuration between application to CompactPCIinterface at Peripheral Slot and System Slot. With the Universaloption, the HB6 Bridge can be configured as a transparent bridgein a System Slot supporting a host, or as a Non-Transparentbridge in a Peripheral Slot as an intelligent subsystem. Theseoptions allow the cPCI-6810/6820 board to be inserted into boththe Peripheral Slot and the System Slot.In addition to the 66MHz/64bit capability, the host bus andsubsystem bus can operate at different speeds. Together with 64-bit to 32-bit access conversion, system architects can utilize thebridge and connect slower or higher speed controllers on primaryor secondary bus, thereby supporting independent speed anddata bus frequency on either side of the PCI bus.
