Room-air-dependent heat-pro-ducing appliances (e.g. gas, oil, wood or coal-operated heaters, continuous flow heaters orwater heaters) obtain combustion air from theroom in which they are installed and dis-charge the exhaust gases into the openthrough an exhaust gas system (e.g. a chim-ney). With the extractor hood switched on, airis extracted from the kitchen and the adjacentrooms. Without an adequate supply of air, theair pressure falls below atmospheric pressure.Toxic gases from the flue or the extractionshaft are sucked back into the living space.
